Job Title: Accountant

Reporting to: Business Manager

Location: Northwood

Salary: £25,000 - £35,000 per annum

The Charity

Our client's Hospice is the specialist palliative care centre at Mount Vernon Hospital, Northwood. With the inpatient unit and day therapy centre, they aim to ensure all patients who face life limiting illnesses, and their families and carers, receive the best possible care to enhance their quality of life with the focus placed on providing relief from their symptoms.

Whilst the basic hospice service is operated and funded by the NHS, everything else (40% of costs) is provided by the Friends of the charity, and the charity that has been supporting the hospice for 42 years. This year the charity is challenged with raising £1.5m plus to support the work of the hospice.

The Role

As the charity's Accountant, the role is responsible for providing efficient and effective financial and administrative support towards the Friends of the Charity.

Key Responsibilities

Management reporting

Ensure efficient maintenance of all financial records of the charity.
Deliver timely, accurate and relevant monthly management accounts information of the charity, including commentary on significant areas and variances from budgets.
Produce other reports and recommendations as appropriate and requested.
Fully Use the Client Relationship Management system (ThankQ) and ensure others are working to the system.
Progress utilisation of automated processes wherever possible to maximise efficiency and minimise administrative resource duplication.
Support Treasurer with additional administration tasks as required
Review and improve administration of donations from all sources and ensure the claiming of Gift Aid.
To ensure that the salary payments (of charity staff and those relating as part of charity contributions) are in accordance with policies

Audit and year end

In close cooperation with the Business Manager and Treasurer prepare the year-end statutory accounts and audit file of the charity.
Liaise with the charity's external auditors


Assist the Business Manager and Treasurer in preparation of the Annual budget.
Work with budget holders to review performance against budget and monitor the overall organisation finances to ensure we are operating within the agreed budget.


Set up, Review and approve budgets for all fund-raising and events organised, monitoring performance and assisting the team to manage the business unit in a commercial manner.

Other duties

To attend the Finance committee and Banking Investment committee and lead on actions delegated by the committees as appropriate.
To attend the Board of Trustee meeting on request.
Make appropriate recommendations and advising on the impact on the charity to Trustees and Business Manager on any internal / external strategic change.
To work with the Trustees in the preparation of long term strategy for the Charity with objectives that can be monitored
Any other duties that may be reasonably requested, commensurate with ability and experience.

Accountant - Person Specification


Accounting Qualifications would be very useful but not essential. Proven track record and experience of such role is necessary.


Relevant experience of working in a similar administrative and finance capacity.
Experience working with financial accounting software packages especially Sage
Experience of using Microsoft Office software proficiently e.g. Excel spreadsheets, Word, Outlook.
Experience of working with CRM packages.
General accounts experience, including processing invoices and reconciling bank accounts.
General understanding of information technology equipment and software.
Project management and working to tight deadlines.
General understanding of Gift Aid processes.


Excellent IT skills.
Excellent written and communication skills.
Excellent numerical skills.
Good telephone manner.
Ability to prioritize own workload.
Accurate data entry skills and strong attention to detail.
