Spencer Clarke Group are working in partnership with Telford & Wrekin Council to appoint a Benefits Assessment Officer to their team.

Contract - 3 Month agency contract with a view to being extended on an ongoing basis.

Location of Work - Addenbrooke House, Ironmasters Way, TF3 4NT

Rate of Pay - GBP15.19 per hour - Negotiable depending on experience.

About the role

To undertake all activities relevant to the assessment of claims for Housing Benefit & Council Tax Support, answering all enquiries and providing related advice and guidance to customers and landlords.

Key Responsibilities

To accurately and efficiently process all Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support claims in accordance with the framework of Government legislation, current regulations and Council policies and good practice. This includes new claims, change of circumstances and information received via data matches such as Real Time Information from the Department for Work and Pensions.
To assess claims received through a variety of access channels, including face to face assessments in Council premises or in the customers home, over the telephone, or via any other method that may be introduced.
To undertake any creation or amendments to Council Tax liability that is required to enable an assessment of Council Tax Support to be undertaken.
To make consistent and well-reasoned decisions regarding the discretionary decision making elements of the scheme, such as direct payment to landlords, overpayment recovery, requests for back dates, and sufficient levels of verification.
To provide advice, guidance and explanations to customers regarding their Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support and connected issues such as Council Tax liability, welfare-benefit take-up, signposting to housing services and advice and support agencies. This advice and guidance may be provided face-to-face, via telephone or via written correspondence.
To answer all incoming Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support enquiries including those via the telephone within the Benefit Contact Centre, letter, email and social media. To ensure that on a rota basis, cover is provided for all customer facing elements of the benefit service during the full range of service operating hours.
