Role Description:

To ensure that the company's products are manufactured to meet the requirements for food safety, are compliant with legislation and customer codes of practice, and are made consistently & to the correct specification.

  • Develop, review and continually improve the necessary quality systems & procedures to meet the main purpose of the role (above) within the required timescales.
  • Interpret technical information, data & trends from process control documents, customer complaints, microbiological and chemical results & take actions as appropriate.
  • Oversee changes within the industry with regards to key trends, developments in knowledge and changes in regulations or legislation. Act as appropriate to comply with such changes.
  • Apply risk assessment and HACCP principles to develop and instigate a HACCP plan for the site which complies with the CODEX principles.
  • Maintain a proactive and professional relationship with customer representatives and external and internal visitors & experts.
  • Oversee and manage the development of members of the Technical team through appraisals and performance indicators (KPI).
  • Identify areas for improvement on site/ lead/ participate in projects to deliver desired results.
  • Complete all relevant customer KPI at the required frequency
  • Manage the Technical services contracts for site, including but not limited to: Pest Control, Laboratories, Laboratory supplies etc.
  • Be the onsite audit lead and manage all onsite audits and visits and work to close out the actions within the timescales allocated.
  • Control the Technical budget for site and seek opportunities to make savings where possible.
  • Oversee the onsite Quality Management System and ensure full compliance with European Legislation, Customer Codes Of Practice, BRC Versions & IDB Group Technical Codes of Practice & Guidelines.
  • Manage the quality objectives for the site as well as leading key Technical meetings to allow cross functional knowledge of the current standards and proactive opportunities.
  • Be the lead auditor for site and conduct any necessary audits of key suppliers of materials or services in line with onsite & compliance requirements.
  • Attend key focus groups to seek further knowledge of Technical expertise and developments to utilise on site.
  • Visit key customers to maintain and develop key Technical relationships and assist in customer satisfaction improvements.

Key Tasks:

Management of the technical function day to day
  • Ensure the business has a clear Technical strategy and maintain forward progress against that strategy throughout the year.
  • Management of the Technical team for day to day activities
  • Management of the quality management system (QMS) and the Internal Audit schedules, to maintain and develop Group standards
  • Lead and develop the site Technical Systems to exceed industry technical standards and drive continuous improvement through the site systems.
  • Lead the HACCP team and ensure HACCP is best in class across all activities, driving food safety & product quality and legality at all times.
  • To deliver best in class training to the Operations and Technical teams to drive an improvement in standards across

    Other Duties
  • To deputies for the Operations Director as directed.
  • To lead and coach the Operations Management team to ensure a broad understanding of Technical challenges in the business.
  • To be the external 'face' of Operational control for all customers (in tandem with the Operations Director)

Experience / Qualifications:

  • Higher level Education in Food Science or similar discipline
  • Min 3 years' experience in manufacture & management of quality systems
  • UK driving licence
  • Computer literate with good working knowledge of Microsoft applications.
  • CIEH HACCP Level 4.
  • CIEH Food Safety Level 4
  • Excellent standard of written and oral communication including presentations skills (outward facing).

  • Dairy experience, and Intermediate microbiology qualification, or above.
  • Experienced competent trainer or holds Train the Trainer Qualification.
  • Experience of working with electronic data systems.
  • Higher degree in microbiology/ Food Safety Management (HACCP or ISO)

Competency & Behaviour:
  • Individual will need strong organisational ability and an ability to prioritise and remain calm and focussed during challenging periods working & communicating effectively with the technical team and personnel at all levels outside of the department
  • TM will require tenacity and not accept deviance in terms of Technical compliance
  • Person will have training/background and approach to train others, and an attention-to-detail when reviewing factory procedures and QMS or HACCP documentation.
