We are looking for a dynamic individual with experience of criminal law and the criminal justice system combined with strong management skills to lead a small team working individually from remote locations.

Inside Justice is a small charity, registered in 2018, which investigates alleged miscarriages of justice. Receiving applications from prisoners usually serving long sentences for crimes they say they did not commit, our work is to review and assess applications to identify whether new legal, scientific or investigative work could be done which could show that an innocent person has been wrongly jailed. When our reviews identify such work, we take steps to ensure it is done, either by commissioning the work ourselves or by making representations to the appropriate bodies. We make submissions to the Criminal Cases Review Commission and the Court of Appeal. Where our casework identifies systemic failings, we undertake policy work to bring change for all within the criminal justice system.

Title: Operations Manager

Time Commitment: Full time desired, although 4 days per week negotiable

Where: Remotely, mainly at home, with flexibility to attend meetings, predominantly in London, as and when required.

Remuneration: GBP35,000 pa FTE

Description: Inside Justice has two clear goals: 1. To investigate alleged miscarriages of justice, making submissions to the relevant public body, if suitable grounds are identified by our Advisory Panel of experts. 2. To lobby for change when systemic failings are identified. The Operations Manager reports to the CEO and holds prime responsibility for supervising all casework in such a way that fulfils our goals.

What will you be doing:

Management of all Inside Justice casework and staff working within the casework team, ensuring cases are progressed in an appropriate and timely fashion and providing weekly reports to the CEO.

Reviewing legal documents including trial transcripts and reports from experts across a range of disciplines.

Representing Inside Justice in a variety of forums with: trial legal representatives; applicants (prisoners); experts from a range of disciplines; victims and applicants' families; trial witnesses.

Management of various in-house data collection systems

The ability to identify systemic failings identified by our casework reviews and to prepare submissions to criminal justice stakeholders (such as Government Select Committees)

Manage volunteers and collaborators

Oversight of our website content and social media output

What are we looking for: The ideal candidate will have significant experience of the criminal justice system and is likely to be a non-practising lawyer, preferably with a working knowledge of police procedures and disclosure responsibilities. Excellent communication and negotiation skills are essential in addition to strong management experience. Experience of charitable governance would be advantageous alongside experience of making policy submissions to public or statutory bodies.

Before you apply: Due to the nature of our work we will require Standard DBS checks and there will be a formal interview process with Trustees as well as the Charity CEO. All applicants are required to sign confidentiality and data security agreements.
