Purpose of the role:

The Commercial Finance Business Partner is responsible for preparing and modelling sales budgets/forecasts, supporting the translation of business strategy into financial plans, providing high quality business performance reporting, insight and constructive challenge to facilitate robust commercial and operational decision making in order to deliver long term sustainable growth. The Commercial Finance Business Partner is a champion for finance, supporting delivery of the five-year plan, and regularly reviewing work is aligned with company needs so that they are fit for purpose in a dynamic and evolving business.

Key Responsibilities:

Business Performance and Partnering

  • Weekly review of the Trade pack to understand current trends and provide proactive analysis including "earlywarnings" of any areas of potential over/underperformance.
  • Partnering the Marketing, E-commerce, Retail and Customer Services departments on regular requirements (reporting, forecasting) as well as new initiatives and ad-hoc projects; partners include Marketing and E-commerce Director/Trading and Optimisation Manager, Retail and Customer Services Director and direct reports.
  • Perform insightful concise analysis for projects and initiatives to support better decision making
  • Support development, implementation and continual review of business KPIs
  • Be the 'translator' between Finance and the Operational areas of the business to help them shape their functional strategies and initiatives with a financial focus.

Reporting and Insights

  • Work with the Financial Controller to:

o ensure the Sales and Gross Margin commentary in the monthly management accounts pack fully explains the results and always answers "why" as well as "what".

o ensure consistency in reporting across all business reports

  • Continually review and streamline processes where necessary to ensure that time is spent more effectively in interpreting data rather than collating data to remain efficient and effective.
  • Regularly review reporting to ensure it is relevant to the business.
  • Provide extra reporting as required internally & externally.

Budgeting & Reforecasting

Ownership of the annual Sales and Gross Margin budget and subsequent reforecasts in line with the timetable set out by the Head of Finance, working with Marketing and Retail budget holders to ensure it is accurate and relevant.

Systems and Processes

Support the use of the Excel cubes to optimise the effectiveness and efficiency of use by the wider finance team and beyond

  • Full understanding of the interaction between the information held in the Cubes and in Open Accounts to assist in the smooth and efficient running of the business.


  • Partner other areas of the business where possible on either regular requirements (reporting, forecasting) or initiatives and projects
  • Perform insightful concise analysis for projects and initiatives to support better decision making
  • Ad hoc project work.

Communication with other departments/external relationships

To work with other teams both internal and external to the business, ensuring that there is two way communication on information/action required and supplied to enable all parties to achieve the business objectives and deliver outstanding customer service, through:

Person specification

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate the following skills and attributes:

  • Qualified Accountant CIMA/ACCA/ACA.
  • Enthusiastic well-rounded individual; organised, self-motivated, and with good written and oral communication skills/interpersonal skills across all levels of the organisation
  • Strong modelling, systems and process experience with the understanding and ability to challenge the status quo
  • Can do proactive attitude with a willingness to learn and develop in a fast paced environment.
  • Strong modelling and analysis skills with the ability to use, interpret and convert data into information to produce ideas, suggestions and improvements.Ability to dig into data and get to the route cause, the "why" not just the "what"
  • Enjoy being in the detail as well as stepping back and thinking big picture.
  • Highly numerate with meticulous attention to detail.
