A strategic alliance has been formed between Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police in order to enable both forces to meet the challenge of reducing policing budgets. By working more closely together the forces will benefit from greater operational and organisational resilience, making us the fourth largest geographic police area in England and Wales.

The main purpose of the role is toreceive, record and prioritise calls for assistance in accordance with the Attendance policy and deploy resources to incidents requiring forensic investigation at the direction of the Principal or Senior Scenes of Crime Officer.

Undertake administrative tasks to assist in the monitoring of duties, annual leave and call outs.

Main Responsibilities:

Co-ordinate and monitor the activity of SOCOs over the four geographic hubs, providing up-to-date information, contact details and directions where necessary.

Receive calls and provide an appropriate level of support, assistance and forensic advice, ensuring that all relevant information is obtained and recorded.

Monitor radio transmissions from SOCO, responding accordingly to support the SOCO. Utilise the radio or phone to contact and deploy the examiners.

Create skeleton records on forensic case management systems to allow the SOCO to populate these post scene examination. At the discretion of a Senior SOCO provide such assistance as is required to examiners in recording or processing of recovered items.

Operate relevant force IT systems, ensuring records and staff locations are kept updated and accurate. Ensure workloads are evenly distributed bearing in mind levels of experience, specialist knowledge and any restrictions. Ensure all examiners are booked on and off incidents as appropriate.

To assist Senior SOCO's in ensuring that SOCO duties are updated in a timely manner to reflect shift changes, call outs, abstractions for major and serious crime, sickness, annual leave and courses.

To undertake other duties commensurate with the nature, level of responsibility and grading of this post, as required.


5 A-C grade GCSE's (or equivalent)

Knowledge of preservation of evidence.

Knowledge of continuity and handling of police exhibits.

Experience in scene assessment and attendance, advising others on scene preservation.

Experience of Command and Control, telephony and Airwave equipment

Experience of dealing with confidential information

Good IT skills including WORD, Excel and at least one forensic case management system.

Able to prioritise competing demand

Able to demonstrate methodical approach and pay particular attention to detail.

Confirmation of appointment is conditional upon successful completion of the Initial Crime Scene examination training course.
