As future technologies evolve towards the More Electric Aircraft, UTAS has a significant need for high performance electric motors and drives across its broad product portfolio. This role is to create a world class capability in the design and manufacture of high performance electric motors and motor drive systems, working closely with other UTAS divisions both as customers and partners, to establish superior, differentiated technologies for future Motor Drive Systems.

The Senior Specialist Engineer – Electronic Packaging will take responsibility for all aspects of Electronic Packaging & Configuration Design of new and in-service equipment within the MDSC range of products. To ensure the mechanical design meets specification requirements and to have a general understanding of the function of the product within the Motor control system of an aircraft.

Key tasks will include:

• Mechanical design of electronic/electrical MDSC products ensuring the mechanical design meets agreed customer specification requirements with regard to technical, cost, weight, reliability, environmental and maintainability criteria.
• Ensuring all appropriate analysis of the mechanical design is carried out, identifying and minimising risk, and where appropriate specifying additional test requirements to validate the design.
• Liaising with and involving appropriate specialist engineers (Stress, Materials, Integration, Manufacturing, etc.), and interpreting relevant analysis/test data to understand and resolve issues.
• Collaborating with the electronic and system design groups to produce effective overall design solutions for the product.
• Working closely with suppliers and manufacturers to ensure correct interpretation of design intent and providing guidance for improving quality of the product.
• Fully documenting the design, preparing design schemes and attending or conducting all necessary design reviews.
• Making technical decisions affecting the product and approving design solutions, manufacturing drawings and acceptable deviations (concessions).
• Using appropriate CAD tools and ensure the capture and maintenance of design data and files.
• Operating within a project team environment and assuming overall technical responsibility for the mechanical design of the product from initial concept through development, manufacture, qualification to in-service use.
• Providing technical expertise to customers, project teams and other functional groups in support of new and mature products, and input in support of the selection and control of suppliers.
• Representing the company both internally and externally at customers and suppliers.
• Assisting in providing timescale estimates and compilation of project program plans for all mechanical and configuration design activities, and ensuring relevant project milestones are met.
• Assuming ‘Work Package Owner’ responsibilities for all mechanical design activities within a project team when required, and supervise as appropriate other mechanical design & configuration engineers.

The successful candidate will be qualified to degree level, in an appropriate engineering discipline and have:

• Work experience and good technical background in all aspects of electronic packaging , including mechanical chassis design, PCB packaging, complex wiring and harness design within an aerospace environment (or acceptable equivalent).
• Knowledge of up to date manufacturing methods, processes and techniques associated with mechanical packaging of electronic products.
• Good analytical skills to assess and solve complex technical problems. Able to create and develop original ideas and make use of different specialist skills to achieve a satisfactory design solution.
• A high level of experience using recognised 3D CAD modelling tools, preferably NX/SDRC Ideas.
• Good interpersonal skills within a team environment and able to communicate well at all levels of the business, including liaison with customers, suppliers, sub-contractor partners, etc. Capable of conveying ideas accurately, both graphically and verbally.
• A flexible approach with regard to all activities performed within the PCB & Packaging design group and where required fully support/assist in all tasks (checking, detailing, etc.).
It is desirable that the person appointed will be:
• Familiar with PCB design and layout tools and/or processes with a basic understanding of electrical/circuit design.
• Familiar with aircraft safety and Airworthiness criteria
