Electrical Motors and Drives

Role Summary:
The successful applicant will be based in Wolverhampton, UK and will be a member of the Motors and Drives group. The applicant will work as part of an integrated product team as the authority on electronics and electric motor drives. They will be integrated into the PCE/aftermarket value stream to provide specialist in-service technical support to prime contractors, airline operators and PCE/aftermarket operations team to solve occurring issues in the area of electrical design. The successful candidate will need to be capable driving APS suppliers for solving identified problems in his area of expertise.
This role will be well suited for an engineer with a very good understanding of aerospace product requirements. They will need to be a good problem solver, have specialised engineering skills regarding electronics/actuation systems and communicator to achieve problem resolution within the time frame defined.
This role will put the candidate in an excellent position to assess existing design weaknesses to identify, and report to the engineering community within APS opportunities for improvement. They will contribute to the development of business strategy for the technology - leading development of specific technology plans, assessing competing technologies and integrating research results into product development plans

Principle Accountabilities:

  • Provide Specialised Technical advisory service to prime contractors, airline operators and aftermarket operations.
  • Hold responsibility for technically interfacing and driving APS electrical equipment suppliers.
  • Interface with the customer on all aspects of the electrical motor and drive system design and verification
  • Apply Electronic systems engineering expertise to develop optimum design solutions that satisfy the customer whilst retaining commercial viability
  • Ensure that electrical and electronic products are designed with full regard to available technology, in-service reliability, cost and schedule
  • De-risk current product introduction with respect to electrical and electronics issues
  • Generate Electronic sub system and unit level specifications from the requirements derived from the system design activity
  • Generate Electronic system design definition documentation to describe the design solution and the rationale behind it
  • Provide requirements management to ensure complete project demands are met from both the customer and internally, including the generation of validation and verification compliance statements
  • To produce test plans in support of integration and system verification
  • Co-ordinate other engineering disciplines to provide the required validation and verification of electrical systems
  • Review validation and verification evidence to judge whether the design / implementation satisfied the requirements
  • Produce systems engineering planning documentation to define how the systems engineering activities of a project will be controlled
  • Responsible for the integration of the systems aspects of projects, ensuring that all functional, performance, reliability and safety requirements are satisfied
  • Proposal writing and management
  • Works as part of a multifunctional integrated product team which is responsible for delivering the project
  • Interfaces with both the Electrical Design Manager and the Chief Systems Engineer who provide technical approval of designs

Work Experience

  • Electro-mechanical skills essential
  • Very good knowledge of electric motors, control and electronic design
  • Have experience in the application of electrical interface devices to control systems.
  • High level electronics and / or electrical product introduction capability
  • 10+ years engineering experience within transport, nuclear, military, automotive or other safety related industries

Typical Educational Requirements:

  • Engineering degree qualified or equivalent
  • Electro-mechanical skills essential
  • Very good knowledge of electric motors and their control
  • Have experience in the application of electrical interface devices to control systems.
  • High level electronics and / or electrical product introduction capability
  • Proven engineering experience within transport, nuclear, military, automotive or other safety related industries
  • Chartered level is highly desirable.
