The phs Direct Division

phs Direct is responsible for the sales, warehousing and distribution of consumable janitorial products for phs customers across the UK. These are primarily paper-based products and soaps. However, as we aim to be a one-stop shop for our customers’ consumable needs, we supply a whole range of items which include specialist products like sharps disposal containers and cleaning chemicals.

phs Direct has grown rapidly through acquisition as well as organically. Today the business turns over around £15m and represents the combination of more than 6 different and fully-integrated businesses. It operates out of two sites across the UK - one in Glasgow and the main office and warehouse in Tamworth with 50 sales and admin staff and 45 warehouse and distribution staff.

The Role

Located in the Midlands (Tamworth - Birch Coppice). The Finance Business Partner will report to the Chief Financial Officer but with extensive engagement with the Managing Director, and other members of the management team. This newly created role will focus on data analysis and interpretation, commercial best practice, efficiencies and profit across the PHS Direct business.

It is expected that principal ongoing responsibilities will include:

  • Providing meaningful financial analysis, input and advice to the management team and Group CFO on both operational issues and commercial decision-making; including completion and/or commercial review of pricing policy, all investment opportunities, acquisitions, business cases and capex requirements, and the subsequent tracking of costs and benefits.

  • Providing such assistance to the Managing Director as may reasonably be required to secure the orderly and profitable development of the business within the framework of business plans approved by the Board.

  • Providing incisive and user-friendly management information and reporting to the Managing Director, the wider management team within the division and Group management, identifying business implications in complex data or information.

  • Interpreting variances and trends in financial data and relating these to operational performance.

  • Helping to prepare the Division’s monthly trading updates and board reports.

  • Co-ordinating the Division’s budget and forecast processes providing meaningful analysis and commentary to the Divisional management team and the Group finance department.

  • Ensuring that a robust financial control environment exists at all times and that all systems and reporting operate to the highest standards with financial data accuracy being key.

  • Working with the Managing Director and divisional management in the development of pricing policies to deliver new business on acceptable commercial terms (including appropriate margin and risk evaluation).

  • Working with the Managing Director and the management team on wider business processes continually to seek and improve both operational efficiency and divisional profitability.

  • Working with the Managing Director to ensure adherence to/compliance with PHS group policies and procedures relating to internal financial control, delegated authorities, contract approval process, bank mandates, etc.

  • Ensure that a robust financial control infrastructure and environment exists at all times.

  • Ensure that each operating unit is operating to the highest standards and its systems and reporting are consistent with wider Group policies and guidelines.

  • Full responsibility for the Credit Control team (4 people) who support customers within phs Direct. You will work closely with the phs Group Credit Control team to meet their standards and targets, as well as the phs Direct sales and leadership teams.


  • Newly qualified or finalist working towards a recognized accountancy qualification (ACA, ACCA, ACMA).

  • Broad financial management background in a business-to-business multi-site (or similar) service organisation.

  • Maintains and demonstrates financial awareness through current knowledge imparting an appreciation of the financial consequences flowing from commercial decisions, internal policy changes and other external factors.

  • Has excellent MS Office skills, particularly Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
