Principal Embedded Systems Engineer
Staffordshire, UK GBP45-55k+

This is an opportunity for an experienced embedded systems / software engineer to really make a difference within a leading construction vehicle manufacturer based in Staffordshire. In this principal engineer role you will be able to influence the company's standards, processes and strategies globally regarding the design and development software and control for the vehicles.

The position will not involve detailed hands-on design and development but it is likely that candidates would have a design background; probably as an embedded software engineer or control systems engineer that has a good understanding of embedded software for high reliability or safety critical systems.

• You will provide leadership across the business with respect to developing standards for software engineering and control systems strategy
• You will develop strong relationships with software suppliers, staying ahead of industry changes, technology advancements and standards (e.g. MISRA, ISO26262)
• You will be involved with developing specifications and requirements for the group's software and control needs which will involve strategic involvement towards architecture covering hardware, middleware, firmware, high level and low level control interfaces
• You will be involved with piloting and training new techniques (e.g. model based software etc)

Knowledge / Skills Required:
• A degree or higher in a relevant subject (e.g. software engineering, electronics engineering, control systems engineering etc)
• Proven experience within the design and development of embedded systems incorporating both electronics design and embedded software programming (embedded C or C++)
• Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and able to liaise effectively with internal and external suppliers and customers
• Analytical and methodical and able to facilitate change within a large organisations
• Self-motivated and a capable leader (able to lead and mentor a small team of 2-3 engineers)
• Ability to travel with work occasionally (UK and overseas)

More (beneficial):
• Understanding and experience of the entire systems lifecycle (V model) and tools such as DOORS
• Knowledge and experience of analogue and digital electronics design and appropriate tools (e.g. OrCAD, Altium, etc) would be great
• Knowledge of standards such as ISO26262, IEC61508, MISRA, etc
• Knowledge of any of the following would be useful: CAN, HIL, SIL, Matlab / Simulink for model based software control, rapid prototyping, boot loaders, cyber security, automated testing, configuration management, bug tracking and source / version control software.
• Experience of the automotive industry, off highway vehicle systems or military vehicle design would be useful. Otherwise candidates from within the medical device, rail, aerospace or other safety critical domains would be considered
