Role Purpose:

To act as Lead Design Engineer for various projects, managing the mechanical design from initial concept through to site installation and commissioning.

To provide management and technical guidance to the CAD designers to ensure that the mechanical design is produced on time and in line with the required specifications, to ensure that technical enquiries and subsequent purchase orders and mechanical subcontracts include all relevant information to ensure that the supplier can procure and install the required equipment without ambiguity.

To take the mechanical lead in providing on-site technical support to ensure that what we have designed is successfully understood and installed to the required standards and then to provide technical feedback to ensure that lessons learnt from the site are fed back into future designs.

Objectives:
• To lead the mechanical design to ensure that the design outputs are achieved on time, meet the design requirements, and achieve an acceptable level of quality.
• To provide technical guidance to the design team and achieve robust technical solutions.
• Take responsibility to ensure that the mechanical design team understand the relevant specifications and approval requirements and adhere to them.
• Identify technical improvements and cost savings for the work packages.
• To fully own, be responsible and accountable for the mechanical design output. Also to offer design support throughout the project (i.e. feasibility, outline design, detailed design, construction and commissioning).
• To develop best value, robust designs solutions which can withstand external challenge.
• To understand and communicate the design risk and assumptions associated with the project and support the Design Manager in managing this risk. To record the risks and assumptions as the project progresses.
• To offer technical guidance and governance for design review meetings and assessments to ensure that risks and hazards are designed out or minimised to an acceptable level.
• To liaise with subcontractors and suppliers and arrange procurement of mechanical items in line with project programme requirements and to the required client specifications.
• To lead the CAD output to ensure that drawings are produced in line with requirements and document procedures are adhered to by all.
• To share best practice and good / bad experiences with other designers and relevant staff.
• To provide onsite technical guidance and support for any site related issues.
• Using experience to liaise with both commercial and site management to ensure that the mechanical installation work is procured and installed on site in line with anticipated quality, layout and standards.
• To provide technical guidance during the installation phase of project construction to ensure that mechanically it is installed safely and in line with requirements.
• To maintain excellent working relationships with the clients representative, site and office staff and suppliers and key subcontractors.
• To record both good and bad experiences involved in the project and to ensure that this knowledge is shared with the design team and other relevant representatives.
• To perform any other duties consistent with the role including any adhoc projects.
