Job Title: Membership Relations Executive

Location: Midlands based

Travel: Predominantly UK, approx. 65%

To Start: Immediately

Compensation & Benefits: Competitive

Reports to: Group Manager

Background:

One of the UK’s leading trade associations is at the next stage of its future development and is creating a strategic vision to enhance service delivery to its members. The association is well established and highly regarded. It serves nearly 500 member companies, which are predominantly based in the UK. The goals of the association are to improve the business performance of its member companies via an array of activities including; trade shows, publications, advertising, promotion, and training seminars.

The organisation is at an exciting stage of mapping out its future strategy and programs, and hence a need exists for a membership relations executive. We are seeking a home based candidate ideally in or around the midlands as the majority of member companies are located around UK large cities. Regular attendance at the association surrey office will be required

Summary of Position:

A member relations professional is sought, a self-driven and motivated individual who is highly organised and able to take on multiple tasks simultaneously. This is a member facing role, and much of your time will be spend either in direct member interaction, or, listening to the member’s needs, and compiling feedback to report to senior management on how to improve membership benefits. The successful candidate will be capable of taking our membership relations to a higher standard, but will also have the flexibility to bring forward fresh ideas and initiatives to the organisation.

With a wide range of members, ranging from small SME’s to large multinationals, it is essential the individual can address the needs of all the membership and their ultimate end users. You will be meeting senior executives (business owners, managing Director, Directors etc.), and as such you will need the confidence and capability to interact with busy senior personnel.

As an organisation, we are looking to enhance how we communicate our wide membership benefits throughout the organisation, and, at all levels. Whilst you will have good interaction at senior level, it is equally important you have the ability to engage people throughout our membership organisation.

The role involves extensive travel, and it is envisaged you will be out of the office visiting members at least 50% of the time. There will also be significant member interaction over the phone, and thus, a clear, warm and engaging communicator is an absolute must.

We encourage new ideas within our organisation, and an individual with an eye for fresh ideas or innovation would be welcomed. Additionally, we also believe in personnel empowerment, and as such the successful candidate will be expected to create and drive some of their own projects and initiatives that fit within the business needs.

Key Responsibilities:

* Create a “members charter” which effectively sets out our commitment to every member of the organization. Establish key metrics for membership including what the member can expect on an on-going basis (calls, information, personal visits).
* In collaboration with marketing, create more effective marketing/literature which conveys the key member benefits across more effectively.
* Visit members at their own businesses (at least 50% of the time), with remaining time on phone interaction, creating members-charter, new initiatives etc.
* Be a key contact at member events, under the direction of the membership relationship manager.
* Compile visit reports, and provide regular feedback to the member relations manager, and make recommendations for change which can be implemented at senior management level.
* Identify and develop partnership initiatives as membership benefits to encourage companies to join outside of the “Exhibition” benefits.
* Seek new prospective members to the association
* Establish KPI’s for member interaction. Initial targets would be in the region of:

* Every member gets at least one non sales related call per year.
* 225 member visits per year, and coordinated with other staff visits.
* Each visit/interaction needs to be recorded in a clear and timely manner.

Key Skills & Experience Required

* A proven track record of developing and implementing membership relationships which have “made a difference” to current/past organisations. The candidate will be expected to clearly demonstrate examples of this in order to be considered for the position.
* Outstanding communications skills, both internally and externally
* First-hand experience of latest methods in engaging membership driven organisation would be an advantage.
* Competence in preparing visit plans and succinct reports from visits would be an advantage
* You may be degree educated, but it is certainly not essential.

Key Qualities needed

* Experience of membership relations development, ideally from a business to business environment.
* A clear and open communicator
* Creative vision with an ability to “think outside of the box”
* The ability to work with a very broad range of personnel
* The ability to capture the attention of the membership – someone whose call or presence is seem as a real positive within the member’s organisation.
* Tenacity and perseverance to set up extensive member visits during the year, and re-arrange programs at the last minute to fit around members’ business needs
* A real effervescent personality, who can readily engage with a wide range of members.

The ideal candidate would also have the following skills

* A knowledge of some/all of the following areas would be an advantage: manufacturing, processing, packaging, equipment, FMCG
* A demonstrable ability of championing change, ideally within a member driven organisation would also be a distinct advantage
