Senior / Principal Ecologist
Overview / Responsibilities
Wood has a long established but still growing team of over 70 ecologists, delivering high quality services on projects in a variety of sectors, including transport; renewables; nuclear; other power; oil and gas; industry; waste, minerals; property and the public sector. We are seeking to recruit a talented and ambitious Principal/Senior Consultant to join our new office in central Birmingham, whilst also working closely with ecologists in the company’s long-established Leamington Spa and Shrewsbury offices. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing new business and delivering projects across a range of sectors.

Wood is looking for an individual with a background in delivering high quality technical work including Ecological Impact Assessments and Habitat Regulations Assessments on medium to large scale development projects. You must have broad experience and knowledge of biodiversity conservation in England, covering ecological survey scoping and survey methods, biodiversity legislation and policy, species licensing procedures, and ecological mitigation techniques and their implementation on site. You will also have experience in preparing and reviewing documentation in support of planning applications.
You will work closely with other ecology team members and with colleagues in other technical disciplines, on a wide variety of projects, often taking a lead role on managing and delivering stand-alone ecological projects and technical tasks to support consenting processes. You will undertake surveys when necessary, attend meetings with clients, consultees and other stakeholders and carry out technical reporting and reviews of others’ reports. You will devise appropriate mitigation and habitat creation, enhancement, compensation and management schemes. In addition, you will support the growth of the Leamington ecology team, including providing coaching to more junior members of the team.Skills / Qualifications
- Qualified to degree level or equivalent in ecology or a related subject
- An MSc or PhD in a relevant subject would be beneficial
- Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) would be beneficial, as would Chartership (CEcol or CEnv)
- A valid UK driving licence is essential for this role as is the flexibility to work unsocial hours and to work away on site when required
