Area Manager

Location: Shrewsbury or Oswestry (with travel around Shropshire)

Kier Local Highways are currently recruiting for an Area Manager to join the Shropshire Council Highways Maintenance contract

Kier Highways design roads, bridges and intelligent transport systems (ITS), covering strategic and nationally important roads, as well as local roads serving local communities. Our projects range from major improvements to complete renewals of roads and structures. With specialist teams, we manage complex works from conception through to handover at the end of maintenance periods.

Key Responsibilities:

* Manage the highways maintenance contract and external works in the designated geographical area of responsibility. Ensure that work programmes are successfully delivered and that potential problems are identified and resolved at an early stage.
* Overall responsibility for cost and value within designated area. Provide information for commercial staff to enable accurate and timely completion of monthly accounts and final account. Take action as necessary to improve productivity and maximise tender returns
* Work with other team members and the client to develop forward plans and agreed programmes of work. Liaising with the Programme Manager to maximise efficiencies.
* Ensure that the policies of the company and client are adhered to and that the requirements of legislation are met.
* Manage and review the performance of all elements of the supply chain to ensure effective delivery and continuous improvement of their performance
* Management of Company and contract KPI's to ensure compliance to required standards
* Manage and oversee the effective implementation of the current IT Systems across the area.
* Ensure that cost forecasting and control measures are in place and working.
* Manage improvement of the business via the performance management data, ensuring actions are taken and best practice shared throughout the contract.
* Promote a culture of collaboration, integration, continuous improvement, innovation and the use of best practice through the line management.
* Ensure that Quality Management systems are in place and continuously improved
* Provide advice and guidance on the Clients works i.e. via early contractor involvement and participation in scoping.
* Develop first class relationships with clients, subcontractors and all other interested parties.
* Identify and secure works with potential external Clients.
* Manage the external works in the designated geographical area of responsibility. Ensure that work programmes are successfully delivered. Ensure that potential problems are identified and resolved at an early stage.
* Foster good employee relations, ensuring that team members are properly trained and developed to make their best contribution.
* Ensure effective people management practices are carried out across the area in line with Company procedure (team brief, disciplinary, grievance, managing absence, recruitment and induction).
* Develop an environment of safety awareness; ensuring SHE policies, procedures and legislation are complied with
Key Skills and Qualifications:

* Proven construction and highway maintenance experience.
* Business and project management.
