As a chemist reporting to the R&D Manager, this role will involve working as part of the production and the R&D team,
You will work as part of a team of chemists contributing to R&D projects and running the dispersions pilot plant at the site. This is very much a hands-on job for which you should be able to demonstrate good problem solving skills, the ability to understand the concepts, adapt and modify the pilot plant formulations where necessary, and contribute fully to the technical development of the projects.
Main Accountabilities:
• Operation of the dispersions pilot plant, including charging, running, controlling and packing product. Where appropriate, sampling new products to applications and Analytical Department personnel. Analyse results and progress work in consultation with Technical Department Applications personnel.
• Understand polymerisation and product application features, and keep abreast of new developments in the field of dispersion development and scale-up
• Maintaining stocks of raw materials required for development, and finished product stock. Ensure optimum work-off of finished materials.
• Contribute to the scale-up of new formulations onto the dispersion production plant, ensuring all necessary procedures and controls are completed, and all safety concerns are addressed before manufacture. Batches should be analysed, results fully documented, and the product sampled where appropriate.
• Contribute to the maintenance of the control systems for product scale-up, including scale-up forms and trial batch result forms. Ensuring all products meet marketing requirements and are acceptable to production. Organise handover of finished formulations to production, with corresponding handover of technical details to Operation Support dept.
• Report, both through monthly reports and development reports, advances in projects and operations. Update all relevant sections of R&D project management system.
• Ensure maintenance of pilot plant equipment and liaise with engineering and maintenance to schedule repairs and testing
• Ensure efficient use of the pilot plant resources in accordance with agreed R&D project management system
• Work with a degree of flexibility with respect to working hours, in accordance with cover required on the pilot or production plant, and provide out of hours technical cover for the production plant
• Issue permits to work on the dispersions pilot plant systems. This includes performing isolations on process systems, but excludes isolations on site services on the pilot plant.
• Undertake tasks that may from time to time be necessary in support of the dispersions, business, consistent with knowledge skills and training
• Ensure accomplishment of all business activities in the area of responsibility in line with relevant SHE regulations to achieve SHE compliance in accordance with internal contractual and legal

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience Required:
• Minimum of a BSc in Chemistry
• Relevant work experience (preferably in polymer testing or dispersions or formulations).
• Experience working on a pilot plant site / production site
