VP of Engineering/CTO - £150k + equity + bonus - Birmingham

We have partnered with a privately-held, consumer technology businessthat although established, is about to go through another period of growth following the appointment of a new, visionary CEO. This 120 person, challenger brand serves over 1 million users and is currently ranked within top 10 of its industry category making this the perfect opportunity to become a key innovator and set new standards of platform design and architecture that really challenges a wide-spread economy, all while doing some good at the same time.

Working alongside other industry leaders across Marketing, Finance and Operations, you will be responsible for providing technology based solutions against new and existing product roadmaps that challenge existing models and really supports the need to draw on a big data capability that this business is fortunate enough to have heaps of. With a product-led mindset and the ability to work on at both a technical and commercial level, you will be constantly assessing and iterating to ensure the business and their users have a seamless experience with the platform at all times.

With a lean team of 15 engineers, you will have a hands-on approach and stay close to the code and architecture, creating an environment that harnesses diversity of thought, styles and approaches to inspire solution centred focus geared towards improving customer experience and innovating industry solutions.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Working collaboratively with key stakeholders across Engineering and Product, you will be responsible for the end-to-end delivery of the Product and Technology Roadmaps from conception through to launch
  • Key to the success will be the ability to collaborate with senior leaders of the business to help define and deliver both the long-term vision and short-term vision for the organisation
  • You will have overall ownership of system architecture and the execution and delivery of technical solutions and will advise on the various technological options available to address business problems and the feasibility and cost of these options
  • As the CTO you will provide technical thought leadership and holistic thinking to strategic business discussions and will monitor technology trends and changing social behaviours to identify those which may help or indeed hinder progress
  • Drive the creation and implementation of best practices for statistical data modelling, analysis and machine learning
  • Communicate technology strategy to stakeholders including board members, management team, partners and the wider staff
  • Have an awareness and take responsibility for industry standards and ensuring that all technology solutions comply with the relevant regulatory requirements
  • You will utilise your network to act as a talent magnet, helping to attract the best minds in to the business as the company
You need to have:
  • Ability to use technology to solve problems and create opportunities preferably in a mass-market, consumer-oriented website
  • Experience working as a CTO, VP Engineering, Head of Development, ideally within a big data environment
  • Flexible yet focused, comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrable competence at promoting cooperation, building great teams and developing individuals through feedback and guidance
  • In depth understanding of the security challenges facing ecommerce applications and the appropriate mitigation strategies including compliance requirements
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence at all levels of the organisation
  • A strong understanding of the principles of agile development and experience of running scrum teams operating in this way
  • Experience of working within Open Source technology environments using languages and tools such as PHP, AWS, Redshift, Tableau, MySQL
  • Experience also of management off or near shore teams as part of a multi-site team
  • A strong bias towards action and the ability to be able to make decisions in the face of ambiguous and possibly incomplete information
  • Have a hands-on approach and experience working within an SME or start-up
  • Hold an MBA, bachelor’s degree or post-graduation qualification
