Assistant Data Scientist - Commercial Insurance - R, Scala

Urgent requirement for an Assistant Data Scientist for a leading, independently owned Underwriter, whom operate within the Lloyd's and Companies insurance markets.

This is a key role to support the Head of Data Management in executing the exploit element of the data management vision and strategy. Working closely with Data Scientists, Architects, and Developers, applicants will be required to demonstrate how advanced analytics can drive innovation and growth, whilst supporting the firm's strategic initiatives and gain competitive advantage.

This role has a strong focus on implementation, execution, and the learning required to support that focus.

Key Responsibilities:

Innovation and Analysis

- Support analysis, architecture, design, and development of experimental data and analytics solutions.
- Procure data from alternative sources to supplement or enhance analysis.
- Build reusable modules for data access, integration, and analysis to speed time to insight.
- Conduct ad-hoc data retrieval and analysis as needed.


- Collaborate with IT Architecture and Information Security to design and build appropriate analytics solutions.
- Collaborate with Data Quality and Governance to incorporate controls and testing into analytic solutions.

Personal Specification:

Education and Qualifications

- Graduate or a post graduate with a science, technology, engineering or mathematics background.

Skills and Abilities

- Strong analytical skills with attention to detail
- The ability to manage time, meet deadlines and prioritise
- Stakeholder management and ability to communicate concisely at a number of levels
- Understands basic business principles and strategic drivers
- Able to identify and help the business to assess options and solutions that best fit requirements

Knowledge and Experience

- Programming experience including advanced knowledge of at least one programming language (bonus points for exposure to R, Python, or Scala)
- Experienced in managing and manipulating data
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to tailor them appropriately for different audiences, technical backgrounds, and seniority
- Demonstrable proficiency with Data Visualisation tools (e.g. Tableau, QlikView, Power BI, Spotfire, etc.) or Data Visualisation libraries (e.g. D3.js)
- Advanced knowledge of SQL (+1 for GraphQL experience)
- Knowledge of relational and dimensional database structures, theories, principles, and practices (exposure to NoSQL and working with unstructured data is also great)
