Acorns need an inspirational individual to lead a team delivering high quality care for children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions and their families. It’s a role that’s as rewarding as it is demanding; the huge difference you make every day will stretch you, personally and professionally.

The challenge

One of three Heads of Care Service, each of whom report into our Director of Care, you’ll lead a 60-strong team of staff and volunteers who work with children and families in the Black Country.

You will be a member of the Acorns Senior Leadership Team contributing to the strategic direction of the charity and services across the West Midlands for children and their families. You will be an ambassador for Acorns externally; for example, meeting health commissioners or stakeholders in the health, social and voluntary sectors.

You’ll be a role model for Acorns – someone who’s visibly passionate about delivering the highest quality care for the children and families relying on us, whether that’s in their own homes across the Black Country or at our Walsall hospice.

On an operational level you will be motivating multi-talented teams comprising professionals and volunteers and making sure we deliver the very best care every day of the year.

What you need...

You’ll be accountable for organisational decisions and developments – sometimes on the spot – so confident decision-making skills are essential; you’re independent, comfortable with responsibility and calm under pressure. Naturally, you’ll call on a wealth of experience to guide you, including a recognised professional qualification in healthcare/social work and a record of managing multi-disciplinary teams, ideally in a family-centred or bereavement-related role.

You will have a proven eye for quality and have accomplished all-round communication skills – whether you’re talking to children and families, fellow professionals or presenting to external audiences.

It would be ideal if you have some of the following on your CV:

  • Up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding children.
  • Knowledge of the requirements of the Care Quality Commission, HSE and other regulatory bodies.
  • Excellent administrative and organisational skills; experience of setting budgets; MS Office skills
  • Understanding of the services provided by the statutory sector.

The practicalities

We operate a 7-day, 365 day a year rota and we have to be led by children’s needs, so there will definitely be some work outside normal hours. (As you’d expect, you’ll be working on call at times and travelling around the region.)

We offer a competitive salary, 35 days’ holiday and pension contributions – if you’re moving from the NHS, you can keep your current pension. We are committed to providing personal supervision, staff support and continuous professional development.
