W H Tildesley specialises in low-medium volume high performance forgings for a variety of markets.The company’s success relies on the knowledge and skills of its workforce and the capabilities of its manufacturing processes. In order to secure its competitive advantage in specialised markets the group intends to develop advanced understanding of materials characteristics in order to improve manufacturing process design and production practices.

The key objective of this new appointment is to develop and maintain a market-leading knowledge-base in the behaviours and process requirements of forging materials that will enable all employees to provide WHT with a competitive advantage in the manufacture of high-performance forgings in High-Value markets.

Principal Responsibility:

To develop and maintain WHT’s Knowledge Management Systems covering materials, design, simulation and operating procedures. This to include ensuring accessibility, and training in the use of, for all employees.

Duties and Activities.

To provide all managers and other appropriate staff with advice and recommendations on all metallurgical-related enquiries and quality issues.

Assist Managers with the design and delivery of training materials that address knowledge gaps and reinforce best practice.

Ensure the continued capture of workforce tacit knowledge through the use of knowledge-mapping workshops.

Research the forging properties and processing requirements of materials to assist in the development of robust and repeatable methods of manufacture.

Organizing, where appropriate, forging trials and evaluation to establish actual material performance under forge conditions.

Support the simulation engineer in the development of material characteristics files and forging parameters used in the simulation material behaviour to improve die design.

Assist the CAD engineer in the formulation of design rules for product families, incorporating both forging complexity and material characteristics.

To support the Manufacturing Engineer in improving Manufacturing Process Design for both existing and new products.

To advise managers on metallurgical subcontract issues, especially heat treatment.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will have a master’s degree in material sciences and at least 5 years’ experience in metals manufacturing. They must also be able to demonstrate the ability to engage with managers and operators in all areas of the company operations and have a record of promoting greater understanding of material behaviours and process requirements through the use of knowledge management systems. (KMS.) Formal training in KMS will be a major advantage.


WHT operates from a single site in Willenhall in the West Midlands running normal single-shift hours of 8am-4pm (3pm Fridays) for direct manufacturing staff and 9am-5pm (4pm Fridays) for Managers and Administrative staff. Managers involved with Production process may opt to work the manufacturing hours.
