My Birmingham based client (B37) is currently seeking an experienced, flexible maintenance officer / facilities operative for a large technology college in the South Birmingham area.

The successful maintenance officer / facilities operative will play an integral role in ensuring the security, care and availability of the school building, furniture, fittings and equipment. This will involve conducting maintenance/ repairs wherever possible, or alternatively liaising with contractors in order to resolve more technical issues (i.e. plumbing/ electrical repairs).

Alongside general duties, the operative will be a responsible key-holder, fire warden, and appointed health and safety liaison.

The successful maintenance officer/ facilities operative will:
  • Carry out regular floor walks around all buildings to monitor maintenance standards, lighting, heating, ventilation and cooling
  • Carry out security function including shifts spent in the security building at the college entrance, ensuring only those with permission are granted access to the grounds.
  • Monitor the functioning of all windows and doors
  • Maintain the department's electrical and specialist hand tools and reporting any defects/ losses to the Facilities Manager
  • Conduct general housekeeping duties, including litter-picking when required
  • Liaise with grounds contractors to maintain high standards
  • Inspect all drains, gullies and building downpipes for blockages on a regular basis
  • Monitor and repair heating and lighting systems throughout the premises
  • Undertake all non-heating plumbing
  • Undertake all emergency and planned maintainence as delegated by Facilities Manager
  • Provide basic security of the premises including arming/disarming alarm systems, monitoring traffic and parking activities and locking/unlocking properties
  • Act as a Fire Warden and upholding health and safety standards at all times
  • Dispose of all litter from the academy buildings
  • Work in line with a strict budget throughout the procurement of materials and supplies

The successful maintenance officer / facilities operative will have the following skills and experience:
  • Possession of a basic Health and Safety certificate
  • Relevant facilities maintenance experience
  • Ability to perform basic repairs including basic joinery, plumbing and electric
  • Ability to use ICT
  • Ability to work well both alone and as part of a team
  • Ability to work with/manage confidential information
  • Possess a positive, approachable and responsible attitude, as the operative will still have duty of care over the students
  • To be professional, confident and self-motivated
  • Ability to maintain a healthy work/life balance
  • Willingness to be flexible with shift patterns
  • An awareness and understanding of Inclusion, Equality and Diversity in the workplace
  • Any basic certification in electrical wiring/ plumbing would be a great help.

Hours of work: Rotational shifts- early shift (approx 0630- 1400) / mid-shift (0800- 1600) and lates (1100- 1900)
Starting salary: £21,000 per annum
Duration of assignment: Permanent.
