Want to work with an extremely successful electronics company, that have cornered the market in there industry with their cutting edge technology?

We have a role with a company based just outside Birmingham (south) that are currently looking for a Principal Engineer/Technical lead to work on large projects within the rail industry.

These guys work with the biggest rail companies across the world on systems that communicate with sensors of the train/rolling stock - that collates the information in a little black box, then sends it via 3G to various servers at base to be converted into visual information.

This newly created role will see you taking responsibility for all technical issues within our R&D department of electronics, software and mechanical engineers. Reporting to the Design & Development Manager, you will be the key contact to other departments on technical matters. You will use your in-depth electronics knowledge to oversee design work, and to assist and mentor junior engineers, as well as performing hands-on electronics design.

Tasks & Responsibilities

· Oversight of all technical issues within R&D

· Leading design reviews

· Mentoring junior engineers

· Hands-on electronics design and development, including schematics, PCB layout, & design verification

· Providing technical input into product roadmaps and specifications

· Leading technical brainstorms to assist in the resolution of problems / aiding design

· Ensuring the department’s technical lessons learnt are applied across all products

· Assessing new technical tools

· Implementing product reliability improvements and cost reductions

· Assisting with the resolution of quality issues and field failures

· Supporting customers on technical issues

· Dealing with obsolescence issues

· Supporting recruitment activities

Required Skills & Experience

· Many years of in-depth analogue and digital electronics component level design experience

· Low power, low voltage DC/DC converters

· Use of common busses such as SPI, I2C, RS232, RS485, USB, UART & Ethernet

· Electronic CAD schematic and PCB layout design

· Experience of designing for EMC and debugging of EMC approval issues

· Experience of embedded software development

· Leading technical electronics design reviews

· Design verification testing and debugging of electronic circuits

· Experience working in a variety of electronics companies, with good practical knowledge of applying standard engineering practices such as gated review processes, change control, documentation etc.

· Experience of the full product life cycle, including taking products into mass production

· Creation of technical documentation

· Ability to communicate at all levels, and the ability to summarize complex technical issues

· Excellent written and verbal communications

· Pro-activity

· Attention to detail

· Team working and very strong inter-personnel skills

· Multi-tasking and ability to work under pressure

Desirable Skills & Experience

· Altium experience would be a benefit

· RF Design

· FMEA analysis

· Programming & use of FPGA / CPLD

· Some experience of mechanical design would be an advantage
