Assistant Manager - Worcester

Reports to: General Manager

Hours: full time, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends

Contract: Permanent, full time

Start Date: August 2017

Right now, we are looking for an Assistant Manager to join the team in our brand new Fitness 4 Less Gym & Swim in Worcester.

Overall purpose

The Assistant Manager is responsible for working directly with the General Manager to ensure the smooth day-to-day operations of the club. This will include administrative duties, health and safety checks, and occasional delegation of responsibilities to team members. The ideal candidate will have a proven record of multi-task management, and be able to confidently ensure successful completion of tasks, while at the same time having the ability to carry out projects "hands-on."

The Assistant Manager will assist in the growth and success of the club, ensuring the cleaning standards are high. The reception team are fulfilling their duties and following procedures. All health and safety checks are carried out either by yourself or the reception team.

The facility includes a 15m swimming pool, sauna and steam room. male and female changing rooms, an open plan gym area with life fitness and hammer strength equipment. A spin studio and normal studio, a female only gym and a functional training and hit training area. Hours of work will include working outside normal hours, early mornings, evenings, weekends and public holidays.

Your commitment:

This is a full time role working 40 hours per week; 5 days out of 7. Flexibility is required to suit the needs of the business and will include, 'earlies' (6am-3pm), 'lates' (2pm-11pm) & weekends (8am-4pm) shifts to support club opening hours. The successful candidate will need to be available for the full complexity of shifts, which are on a rota basis.

Summary of duties

  • Assist the General Manager in the training and induction of staff, including creating and maintaining staff rotas where required, payroll & day to day management.

  • Provide users/customers with an appropriate induction to the club and guidance on the use of equipment

  • Pro-actively ensure that the highest standards of hygiene and health and safety are observed at all times.

  • Carry out daily, weekly and monthly health and safety checks of the site and the equipment, ensuring that the premises and its equipment are checked and maintained in good working order and in accordance with Fitness 4 Less health and safety policies and procedures

  • Assist visitors with enquires in a friendly and effective manner, pro-actively developing and maintaining high standards of customer care

  • Follow Normal Operating Procedures and Emergency Action Plan

  • Ensuring that Safe Working Practices are enforced

  • Administer First Aid as required, logging any incidents and reporting them to the General Manager immediately

  • (cover staff absences. lunch).

  • Any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the General Manager

    Selection criteria

    Desirable qualifications/experience:

  • Qualifications to Level 2 or above in a sports/leisure related discipline (or equivalent)

  • Gym/fitness instructor qualifications

  • Leisure degree or equivalent professional qualification

  • Substantive experience working in a sports/fitness centre, preferably one with a wet side

  • Good working knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and other legislation in relations to leisure centre operations, with experience administering risk assessments

  • Understanding of Normal Operating Procedures and Emergency Action Plan


    Key attributes for the role:
  • Recognized First Aid qualifications (or willingness to train prior to taking up the role)

  • A desire to work in a team-focused, community environment

  • The ability to assist customers and their queries and concerns with tact and sensitivity

  • National Pool Lifeguarding qualification (or willingness to train prior to taking up the role)

  • Pool plant operators certificate (or willingness to train prior to taking up the role)

  • Experience in managing staff

  • Good time management is essential

  • Operational experience within customer facing environment.

  • Management experience with strong leadership skills.

  • Excellent communication skills with the willingness to be approachable to members & staff and a genuine interest in tackling & resolving member issues. In depth knowledge of H&S guidelines and regulations.
