The post holder will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide high quality ophthalmology care. They will undertake delegated duties proficiently, as directed and under the supervision of qualified staff. The post involves working in the Community Ophthalmology clinics across various sites

Knowledge skills and experience required:

  • Good basic education to GCSE or O level standard for numeracy and literacy
  • NVQ level 2/3 or equivalent experience
  • Keyboard and computer skills
  • Ability to work accurately with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • To be able to follow instructions and undertake a designated work plan

Direct care

  • Assist Patients/client where necessary, using basic nursing care to ensure their emotional and physical comfort, and mobility needs. Respecting and maintaining Patients independence, privacy and dignity at all times.

Indirect care

  • Give consistent support to senior colleagues to ensure a safe working environment for both staff and patients/clients, including the reporting of defective equipment for servicing or repair and correct handling of chemical substances, in accordance with the current trust policy.
  • Contributing to the on-going emotional support and protection of all Patients/Clients and those significant to them.
  • Ensuring all Patients are nursed in a manner that complies with CHEC’s infection control policies and standards.

General duties

  • Maintaining accurate medical records, including manual and electronic data entry during the patient’s journey.
  • Have good communication skills to enable effective working relationship with other members of staff.
  • Help to keep clinics clean and tidy, participating in regular cleaning of equipment and clinical areas.
  • Perform other duties as delegated by trained clinical staff within the range of appropriate procedures for which training has been given and competence achieved, assisting in the efficient running of the department.
  • Performs necessary investigational and diagnostic procedures for which training has been given and competence achieved. Procedures will include:
  • Visual acuity testing
  • Humphrey visual fields test
  • Digital fundus photography
  • Pachymetry

This list may be amended as new diagnostic procedures develop.

  • Performs necessary treatments as prescribed by an Ophthalmologist, once training given and competence achieved.

Treatments include: - Bandage, Eye cleaning/bathing

This list will be amended as new treatments are developed.

  • Participation in ensuring adequate levels of stock are maintained within the clinics including the ordering of basic clinical supplies. Also observation and reporting of defective equipment where necessary.
  • Using electronic patient records and appointment systems to view medical information and request patient notes.
  • Preparation and organisation of medical notes for all disciplines within the clinics.
  • Assisting the Doctor in minor procedures with knowledge and awareness of surgical sterile field required and preparation of sterile equipment.
  • Organise and arrange patients who are required to go on the surgical waiting list giving full explanation of procedures involved and answering any questions, which may arise.
  • With basic pharmacological knowledge, is able to instil appropriately prescribed eye medication ensuring that it is always checked with a prescription by either a trained Nurse or Doctor, in accordance with local PGD.
  • Assists with research within CHEC including organisation of those patients procedures and assisting the Doctor in the treatments required.
  • Organise and oversee the smooth running of clinics aiming for patients to be seen within 15 minutes of their appointment time as per CHEC policy.

Communications and Working Relationships:

  • To convey and prioritise information given to a range of people, including medical, nursing and other clinical staff.
  • To communicate effectively with patients and carers, some of whom may have communication difficulties or language barriers.
  • Deal with patient enquiries, on the telephone or in person.

General Items:

To provide short-term cover for colleagues during periods of leave.

To ensure that all CHEC’s standards are maintained and monitored to improve the quality of care to all whom come into contact with services provided by Community Health & Eyecare
